The National Institute of Open Schooling, formerly National Open School is a national level board of education in India, controlled and managed by the Government of India. It was established by the Ministry of Education of the Government of India in 1989.

Open schooling is a flexible, non-formal educational system designed to provide learning opportunities outside the traditional classroom environment. It caters to individuals who cannot or choose not to attend regular schools, operating primarily through distance and open learning methods.

Exams are held at periodic intervals, allowing students to prepare at their own pace and choose suitable dates.

Flexible Subject Strategy

Distribute subjects and appear multiple times a year with up to 4 subjects per attempt for focused preparation.

Early Board Relieving Period

Clear up to 4 board subjects by December, freeing up the crucial January–June period for JEE/NEET prep.

Clear Board Cutoffs

Reappear in passed subjects to improve scores until the final marksheet is issued, and clear board eligibility cutoffs confidently.

Yes, NIOS is a Government of India-recognized national board whose certificates are fully accepted for higher education and all major competitive exams.

For Secondary (Class X): Minimum age 14 years with last class passed marksheet; even students with no formal schooling or home-schooled learners can register with a self-declaration.
For Senior Secondary (Class XII): Minimum age 15 years with a passed Secondary/10th from a recognised board.

Stream 1: For fresh learners (April/October exams)
Stream 2: For learners who failed in other boards
